Nursing Trends in 2009
Much has been written about issues that have plagued professional nursing since the days of Florence Nightingale, such as long hours and mandates, poor working conditions, understaffing, high patient loads, low pay relative to other professionals. Those issues remain and we will save them for another forum, another day. Today, modern nursing is evolving with the rest of the electronic revolution and EMR (electronic medical records) are a big part of those changes. If your hospital or institution has not started to make the change, stay tuned, they shortly will be. This has opened up a new field called Nursing Infomatics and is fresh and wide open, many opportunities exist in this area. If you watch/listen to modern politics, you'll hear President Obama and others extolling the advantages of EMR along with economic stimulus packages for upgrading. At the very least, if you are not yet computer literate, you should not waste time becoming so or risk being left behind.
