Amazon Price: $33.56
Customer Review: This book has helped me tremendously with my Masters studies in Forensic Sciences. i don't think I would have made it through Pathology without it. It is full of information, but luckily is not as heavy or as big as an encyclopedia. The CD is also a very good addition to the mix. Well worth the money.

by National League for Nursing (NLN)
Amazon Price: $24.96
Customer Review: Overall, this guide was very helpful and I did score well on the NLN exam. The practice tests were particularly useful, and I think taking all of them is essential to doing well on the real test.
That said, this guide suffers from some atrocious editing, particularly in the science section (for example, they give the wrong quantity for a mole in the chemistry section: 6.02 +... instead of 6.02 x...). If you know the material already and you're just using this book for review, then you'll be able to pick out the errors. If anything seems off, check a secondary source. I even noticed a couple of questions in the science practice tests that had the wrong answers in the answe...

by Atul Gawande
Amazon Price: $9.89
Customer Review: I have read a lot of Dr. Gawande's research and his book "Complications" is a great guide for the layman to understand why things often go wrong in medicine. Dr. Gawande does a great job at de-jargonizing and unpacking the medical field so that anyone can understand why medicine is so complicated. This book doesn't necessarily contain the answers (see Gawande's books, "The Checklist Manifesto" and "Better" for solutions) but does a great job of laying out the problems. Medicine is complicated and doctors are mere humans. While it is easy to develop a system for dealing with machines, humans are dynamic and every situation is unique. No matter how much we may want to quantify a particula...

by Jane Maxwell, Carol Thuman, David Werner, Carol Thuman, Jane Maxwell
Amazon Price: $15.46
Customer Review: This book was recommended to me by a nurse who had been on a number of medical missions to Africa. After looking through it, I believe that it would be a necessary reference book for anyone who might be able to access modern medical resources. There are many such situations ranging from a hurricane such as Katrina, or living in an area where medical resources are not readily available. It is a little large to be carried in a backpack but if you are going on an expedition it would be a good resource. There are many books which are supposedly "home medical guides" but most are written for people in the US who are 5 minutes from a pharmacy or hospital. This book gives you specific medical de...

by Mary J. Shomon
Amazon Price: $11.51
Customer Review: I think Mary has her heart in the right place when she wrote the Thyroid diet. However, the book falls short on giving all the information that I need. For example, I just read another book which addressed thyroid in more details "the Perfect 10 Diet." For example, The thyroid Diet falls short from discussing the negative effect of a high protein diet such As atkins on thyroid or the role of Splenda. It is a good book, but falls short on giving all the right information.

by Atul Gawande
Amazon Price: $10.08
Customer Review: This book is a compliation of authentic stories that elucidates the importance of enhancing or becoming better at what you do. The book is categorized into three parts. They are dilligence, doing it right and ingenuity. In each case, he lucidly supports his propositions with pragmatic examples that motivates the reader to apply those lessson's to his or a her own personal life. It amazes me how Dr. Gwande find time to write these books as a busy general surgeon. But when does find time and write these books, he surely hit it out of the pack. If you are a person wanting to enhancing your aptitude at work or any part of your life, this is the book to read.

by Jerome Groopman
Amazon Price: $10.37
Customer Review: In "How Doctors Think" the author has provided a useful primer for non-doctors on what is going through the mind of most doctors when they are trying to investigate what is wrong with you. Trained in quantitative Bayesian analysis, using checklists, and full of other biases ranging from personal bias against patients who appear flaky, to a tendency to stop investigating when evidence that might prove the doctor's original diagnosis is found, even if that diagnosis is wrong, Groopman encourages readers to understand what is going on in the doctor's mind. Full of stories both of doctors who overcome these biases and those who seem to embrace them. Groopman advocates for patients to be engage...
